  • how do you say 'haute couture' anyway...

There are some things in this world I don't understand. One is literature and why some really demented stories become classics and schools' required reading.

Another would be the fashion industry. The clothing....they're so bizarre. And after you put tons of dollars and tons of hours in designing it...who wears it? Judging creativity seems very subjective to me, but there must be some standard and eye for excellence which I obviously haven't got.

My friend is a fashion design student at HK Polytechnic University and I attended their graduation fashion show yesterday. First fashion show I've ever been to...as strange as expected. The collections were definitely creative and I can at least appreciate the work behind each one if not the look of it (though some I did like). It's not easy to sew, much less come up with your own design -- I'll sew a pillowcase and that's about it.

  • Blocking the Leeches

    introducing....my latest firefox add-on:

    LeechBlock!

"LeechBlock is a simple productivity tool designed to block those time-wasting sites that can suck the life out of your working day. (You know: the ones that rhyme with 'Blue Cube', 'Pie Face', 'Space Hook', 'Hash Pot', 'Sticky Media', and the like.) All you need to do is specify which sites to block and when to block them."

It's kind of sad that I don't have the internal self-control to not waste time but must rely on external add-on blocks. But I guess everyone can use accountability. Help yourself out. In any case, I'm happy about Leechblock, because it will mean less kicking myself after emerging out of FB x amount of time later than I intended.

Thanks to Challies Dot Com for the reference.

  • why i have bad mental math

the other day, i went to a chinese medicine pharmacy and saw the cashier work up the cost total with an abacus.

i was impressed and was reminded that i used to know how to calculate basic arithmetic on an abacus too (though far more novice than that guy).

and this is why i have poor mental math.

back when learning and practicing mental math in school, i pictured an abacus and calculated that way. since then, i've forgotten most if not all abacus, and thus my mental math is also lost. now i am very slow doing it with numbers.

maybe one thing i'd like to do before i die is learn this chinese calculator again.

  • file complaints here.

    not complaints.  thoughts. feedback.

    • if you have a special guest speaker flying all the way from NY, you should cut down the singing time to give more preaching time. especially if the speaker is Tim Keller, and he has to speed through his loaded message, and you're not done thinking about one point before he moves on to the next, because the clock is ticking.
    • so why do drum sets have a plexiglass thing around them anyway? isn't it to keep them from being too loud and overpowering everything else? and if that's the case, isn't it kind of defeating the purpose when you put mics inside the glass wall?? my poor ears. (i guess i didn't have to sit in the 2nd row. but i wanted to see the preacher.)
    • i don't really think "famous" is a great adjective to praise Jesus with. (oh. yeah, He's famous. Just like the Beatles and Michael Jordan and Brad Pitt.)
    • there are A LOT of good songs about the cross and the gospel to respond with after a sermon on such a topic.....
so it was pouring rain today and my umbrella leaked, and the elevators were broken so i was late to Sunday School (at a different church), but it was great to catch a friend for a few hours at the airport and get a free ride directly home afterwards. it was a good Sunday.

i kind of like typhoon-ish weather anyway.
